Mr. Richard Peterson
Orthopaedic Surgeon FRACS, MBChB
Richard Peterson is a New Zealand trained surgeon who specialises in lower limb reconstruction.
Following completion of his medical degree and general orthopaedic and trauma training, Richard undertook extensive sub-speciality studies in hip & knee arthroplasty and sports knee surgery in North America and New Zealand.
Richard’s practice now focuses almost exclusively on hip and knee surgery. This includes primary hip replacement via anterior and posterior approaches, robotically assisted knee replacement surgery, revision hip and knee replacement and sports knee surgery. He is a high volume joint replacement surgeon performing between 200-300 replacements per year.
Richard is a faculty visitation surgeon teaching robotic knee surgery to other surgeons across New Zealand and Australia. His practice has a strong technology focus incorporating app based rehabilitation programs and modern surgical techniques with technology assistance. He continues to strive for excellent outcomes for his patients and his practice is constantly evolving to achieve these goals.
Richard consults at The Collingwood Centre and operates at Manuka Street Trust Hospital.

Richard has been in practice for over 20 years working at both Nelson Public Hospital and Manuka Street Hospital. He now works exclusively in private practice.
Richard continues to remain very active in the New Zealand orthopaedic community. He is a member of the New Zealand Knee Society and New Zealand Hip Society. He was the Chair of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association (NZOA) Technology Committee and was also a Council Member of the NZOA. Richard has a working relationship with the orthopaedic industry and has represented different orthopaedic companies as a faculty member and keynote speaker at orthopaedic meetings.
Richard is Chair of Nelson Specialists Limited Partnership and a director on Manuka Street Hospital.
Richard and family
Richard, his wife and three children chose to settle in Nelson where he continues to provide an advanced orthopaedic service to the community, while enjoying the wonderful lifestyle Nelson has to offer. When not working, Richard enjoys spending his time with his Wife and 3 adult children in the outdoors. He enjoys mountain biking, skiing, kayaking and hiking, and maintains a very active lifestyle.
